Researcher Highlights Yunju Temple Stone Sutras’ Historical Value, Social Significance and Preservation

Gao Fumei, a researcher at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences, recently gave an interview to China Daily, offering an in-depth interpretation of the Yunju Temple stone sutras’ historical status, social value, and preservation efforts.
Gao, who is also director of the academy’s Institute of History, described the collection as one of the world’s largest “stone libraries.” She noted that the millennium-long carving project was sustained by contributions from across society, with monks, officials and ordinary believers all participating in preserving Buddhist teachings for future generations.
She added that the collective effort also facilitated interactions and integration among different ethnic groups over more than 1,000 years, serving as an important testament to the development of a shared Chinese national identity in the Beijing region.
The interview was published in China Daily on March 21,2026.
